I don't think that all of those people are trying to be sexist when pointing out the disparity in jail time. They may be giving a bad take on the given situation, but I think that they're just jumping the gun, and underneath that is a justified irritation that there is genuinely a difference in sentencing when controlling for all of the variables.
I'm more inclined to think they didn't go to Russia straight away because it wasn't something they were 100% commited to as a definite end goal, seems more just a backup escape plan made under the impression they'd be intelligent and aware enough to know the authorities were onto them before any kind of subpoena or arrest warrant came into effect.

The view on the difference in crime isn’t really sexist and is a legit question. At least in the US women do get less time for similar crimes and only get higher sentences child neglect afaik.
