Rarely seen Matthew Wong works to go on show in Venice – The Art Newspaper

A serious exhibition of not often seen works by the influential late Chinese language-Canadian artist Matthew Wong will open in Venice subsequent 12 months, coinciding with the 61st Biennale.

The present will happen on the Palazzo Tiepolo Passi (9 Might-1 November), and can embrace 35 works courting from 2015 to 2019. It would, based on a challenge assertion, “discover interiors, each bodily and psychological”.

The exhibition is organised by the Matthew Wong Basis, which was based by the artist’s dad and mom Monita Wong and Raymond KP Wong in 2020, following the artist’s dying by suicide in 2019.

The exhibition’s curator John Cheim, a founding associate of Cheim & Learn gallery, says in an announcement: “The exploration of the inside has lengthy been a central concern in trendy and post-war artwork—from the vibrantly colored and patterned home scenes of Matisse and Vuillard to the emotionally charged areas of Munch, Van Gogh, and Duchamp.

“Matthew synthesised these traditions into a singular visible language, using dense color and expressive brushwork to rework rooms into vivid, non-naturalistic settings.” The exhibition catalogue features a textual content by Nancy Spector, who stepped down as chief curator of the Guggenheim Museum in 2020.

In 2020, the author Kenny Schachter mentioned Wong’s meteoric rise and the affect of his dying. An obituary in The New York Occasions described Wong as “a promising self-taught painter whose vibrant landscapes, forest scenes and still-lifes had been simply starting to command consideration and demanding acclaim”.

The exhibition announcement comes following the opening of the Matthew Wong Basis headquarters in Edmonton, Canada, designed by Oregon-based ZGF Architects. Based on the muse web site, key initiatives embrace the manufacturing of publications on Wong’s numerous inventive output and ongoing analysis for a listing raisonné of his work and drawings.

An announcement from the muse says: “The muse has additionally preserved Wong’s studio and supplies of their entirety, all of which is now housed within the basis’s headquarters.
